The Church of Babel

Or as I call it "Church Brigade".

In Genesis chapter 11, we see the population of the earth trying to build a tower to reach heaven. To elevate themselves. This need to elevate one’s self seems to have survived throughout history, from ancient times. Christ himself spoke against it while he was here on earth. Within our churches, the political struggle to climb, and be recognized as being holier than one's contemporaries and closer to God, continues unabated. And sadly, this will continue until the end. Even Satan began this way.

As a child, I attended the church equivalent of Cubs or Scouts. It was known as Boys Brigade. Of course there was also a Girls Brigade.

The program involved many activities which enabled the participants to earn merit badges, once the required levels or skills were achieved. Looking at the churches I grew up in, it seems clear that they also recognized merit based achievements, just like the badges. The more "badges" you achieved, the higher up the church's political ladder you climbed. Hence the term "Church Brigade".

So let us now consider the internal social and political structure within our churches.
Let’s list the lowest rung on the ladder and then climb to the top. The higher the number, the more people you can look down on and claim authority over. Let me state that some of these positions may be legitimate, but most are imagined, or at least greatly inflated and puffed up with their own self importance.

1. Infant. (one Christian parent) or
2. Infant. (two Christian parents)
3. Attend Sunday School.
4. Attend Youth group. (Single)
5. Attend Youth Group. (In a relationship within the church)
6. Young unmarried adult believer.
7. Young married (to non-believer) adult believer.
8. Young, unmarried adult believer. (in a relationship within the church)
9. Young unmarried adult believer involved in leadership e.g. youth group, Sunday school.
10. Young unmarried adult believer (in a relationship within the church), involved in leadership e.g. youth group, Sunday school.
11. Married. (Both believers within the church)
12. Married and leadership e.g. youth group, Sunday school.
13. Married with children.
14. Married with children and involved in leadership e.g. youth group, Sunday school.
15. Ministry leader e.g. Bible study, Home group, Women’s group, Music etc.
16. Deacon.
17. Elder.
18. Pastor.
19. Evangelist.
20. Missionary.
21. God. (Holy Trinity)

I could easily overindulge in this perceived political hierarchy and insert any number of additional levels or achievements. But I think you get the general idea.

Now, it's interesting that in the beginning, Lucifer was immediately below God in rank. The position was too much for him to bear without becoming puffed up with his own importance and overwhelmed with pride.
It is noteworthy to see who holds that position now.

This perceived inequality and the lofty attitudes of those in the highest positions below heaven, and the mad scramble to climb higher for a better view of those beneath you, is the disease that eats away at the body of Christ from the inside.
